The Day AoT Left Us
This is an edited version of the conversation in the Civil War Home Chat Room, as it occurred, on the day, and part of the day following, that we were notified of our friend AoT's  death.

11/1/2005 3:18 pm (et) ks: shotgun, I've forwarded you an email.

11/1/2005 3:18 pm (et) HankC: dang it, Dang it, DANG IT...

11/1/2005 3:19 pm (et) ks: That and more, Hank. :(

11/1/2005 3:19 pm (et) HankC: I've got a post ready for CWWT...I'll let one of you do it...

11/1/2005 3:20 pm (et) shotgun: I haven't got it yet ks but will keep an eye open.

11/1/2005 3:20 pm (et) ks: It would seem that at this very moment, one of our own is being laid to rest. AoT is at rest.

11/1/2005 3:21 pm (et) ks: I've been concerned that his absence here in the chatroom might have meant he'd taken a turn for the worst.

11/1/2005 3:21 pm (et) shotgun: Pat, tell me you are saying what I think you are.

11/1/2005 3:22 pm (et) ks: STEPHEN DYER WAKEFIELD, 53, of Memphis, formerly of Terre Haute, IN, passed away Saturday, October 29, 2005 at Select Specialty Hospital in Memphis. Funeral mass will be said 11 a.m. Tuesday, November 1, at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 3700 Thomas St., with interment to follow at 2:30 p.m. in Antioch Cemetery in Hornbeak, TN. Mr. Wakefield was a labor/employment attorney with Wyatt, Tarrant and Combs. He was a member of the Trial Attorneys Association, and a Fellow of the American College of Trial Attorneys. He attended West Point, and he was a graduate of the University of Indiana School of Law where he was Phi Beta Kappa. He was also a member of Cleburnes Civil War Historical Group. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Marsha; his daughter, Jenny and her husband, Donny; his brother, R.V. Wakefield, and his mother-in-law, Jennie Davis. The family requests memorial contributions, in lieu of flowers, to Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church. Memphis Funeral Home Poplar Chapel 901-725-0100

11/1/2005 3:22 pm (et) HankC: well, I pushed the button...

11/1/2005 3:23 pm (et) ks: I'm so very sorry to say that I am. Hank just emailed me with the info I've posted. :(

11/1/2005 3:26 pm (et) shotgun: You folks are going to have to excuse me for a few. This news just won't let me type. Steve and I go back a lot of years on this ole Internet and though I only met him once face to face I considered him one of the few real friends I have. See you folks later.

11/1/2005 3:26 pm (et) amhistoryguy: "The muffled drums sad roll has beat - The soldiers last tattoo; No more on life's parade sahll meet That brave and fallen few - On fames eternal camping ground, Their silent tents are spread. And glory guards, with solemn round, The bivouac of the Dead" - Theodore O' Hara

11/1/2005 3:27 pm (et) shotgun: logs off.

11/1/2005 3:34 pm (et) amhistoryguy: enters the chatroom.

11/1/2005 3:34 pm (et) ks: wow...I pulled up the muster website and then the pics of us all at Chickamauga. Somehow the combination of pages I have up also set off the audio file I have for the Memories link of "Ashokan Farewell" being played by that single banjo. Seems so right at the moment.

11/1/2005 3:35 pm (et) HankC: banjo?

11/1/2005 3:35 pm (et) ks: http://www.angelfire.com/fl2/map1863/memories2001.html Czech out that link. The pic of AoT laying in the grass is a favorite of mine. We teased him about his sprawl in the grass, so center-fold-ish.

11/1/2005 3:36 pm (et) ks: Yes, banjo. On the memories page long ago I linked a banjo audio file of Ashokan Farewell (with the artist's permission of course).

11/1/2005 3:38 pm (et) HankC: enters the chatroom.

11/1/2005 3:40 pm (et) ks: First met AoT in the old WebAmerica chatroom. That's when he was still involved in reenacting. Met him face to face first time at the 1999 Muster at Shiloh and Corinth. He and Mary Alice and Jamie joined us at the Corinth VC (then a small house behind the Curlee mansion)...and we were off to the races so to speak. Lots of CW journeying done that weekend. :) AoT was at the helm the next day at Shiloh. He took us into Fraley Field and slapped his hands together to make the sound of a rifle shot. That "crack" brought the place to life in a way I've seldom experienced time traveling on CW battlefields.

11/1/2005 3:40 pm (et) amhistoryguy: While our world is so much the worse off for having lost him, somehow I can just imagine him being greeted into the next by all his favorite Civil War era heroes.

11/1/2005 3:42 pm (et) amhistoryguy: I didn't know him well, only "spoke" to him a couple of times here in chat - but the size of his heart sure came through, even electronically. I so much looked forward to meeting him in person.

11/1/2005 3:43 pm (et) ks: Have thought the same, ahg. Figured he's getting some answers from Cleburne, Ben Cheatham and others.

11/1/2005 3:50 pm (et) HankC: AoT is comfortable with the ambiguities of history.

11/1/2005 3:51 pm (et) Marie: We've lost AoT?

11/1/2005 3:51 pm (et) HankC: That is, he don't need to know the exact times, figures, orders etc. in order to make some sense out of it...

11/1/2005 3:51 pm (et) HankC: Unusual for a lawyer ;)

11/1/2005 3:52 pm (et) ks: Sadly, that is the situation, Marie.

11/1/2005 3:53 pm (et) HankC: On Saturday...

11/1/2005 3:55 pm (et) ks: Remembering the first muster and that infamous night in room (still debate about the room number btw) 231. PHP's non-smoking room that was so thick with smoke, one felt like you needed a fog horn to communicate and as if your eyes had been scrubbed with Dutch cleanser. Some people were sensible enough to go to bed. MAP, AoT, PHP, Base and I were up waaaay too late that night. Cussed and discussed the war and solved the problems of the world that night. ;)

11/1/2005 3:56 pm (et) ks: Hank was a braver person than I, Marie. Told Base last week that I've been afraid to Google the papers and how AoT's absence was unsettling.

11/1/2005 3:56 pm (et) ks: I mean that Hank located the obituary I'd been reluctant to search for. :(

11/1/2005 3:57 pm (et) Marie: don't know what to say here....

11/1/2005 4:00 pm (et) HankC: AoT is the real deal...I think of his friendship young Henry who was in the hospital a number of years ago...before my time, actually, but it made a big impression...

11/1/2005 4:01 pm (et) Marie: One of the many things I've learned from y'all is that you can grieve the loss of "a friend you've never met" to quote ...oh who said that?

11/1/2005 4:01 pm (et) ks: Yes, it did...as did the fact that AoT had been the one to donate that computer Henry was using to St. Jude's IIRC.

11/1/2005 4:03 pm (et) Marie: That made a big impression on me, as well....as did his big-hearted taking in of Katrina refugees...

11/1/2005 4:09 pm (et) MAubrecht: Just read the logs. You all have my deepest sympathies in regards to the passing of your friend. I'm too new to say that I knew him, but it looks by the sentiments and postings that he was a wonderful member and friend of this special group. I once told a friend the widow of a historian I knew that I hoped she would take comfort in knowing that her husband was is in a much better place, sharing his passion for the Civil War with the very men he studied. Perhaps you can find comfort in the same sentiment.

11/1/2005 4:11 pm (et) HankC: hello, MAubrecht...you're where I was 5 years ago...wondering what sort of kooky group have I stumbled upon ;)

11/1/2005 4:11 pm (et) ks: Half expected to see Frank listed on that obit. ;) That Tennessee hound traveled many a battlefield mile with his master.

11/1/2005 4:15 pm (et) MAubrecht: I feel at the moment that entering into a topical discussion would be inappropriate.

11/1/2005 4:17 pm (et) HankC: There's a contemporary worship song that goes 'better is one day in his courts than thousands elsewhere'...

11/1/2005 4:17 pm (et) HankC: Which I take to mean he's lived 3000 days in heaven in the 3 days it took us to know he was there...

11/1/2005 4:24 pm (et) MAubrecht: Very nice - sorry had to walk away for a minute - nice day - but getting dark(er) - not adjusted to the time change yet - usually takes a few days

11/1/2005 4:27 pm (et) ks: Kind of lost in thought right now.

11/1/2005 4:28 pm (et) MAubrecht: Totally understand. Perhaps we can chat another time.

11/1/2005 4:29 pm (et) HankC: just have kind of random synapse firings...

11/1/2005 4:30 pm (et) HankC: think I'll head out for a bit...

11/1/2005 4:30 pm (et) ks: Sent email to Joe and Laurie and the civilwarmuster group.

11/1/2005 4:30 pm (et) MAubrecht: Please have a nice night (all 4 of you) and I look forward to chatting again when it is more appropriate.

11/1/2005 4:30 pm (et) MAubrecht: God Bless.

11/1/2005 4:39 pm (et) ks: I'll be back later. Peace...

11/1/2005 4:55 pm (et) Mike: I simply don't know what do say. I'm deeply, deeply saddened, and yet I hope that Steve is at peace now and pain free as he so deserves

11/1/2005 5:03 pm (et) Marie: Once again at Muster there will be one vacant chair :(

11/1/2005 5:06 pm (et) Mike: Jeez....this is tough

11/1/2005 5:06 pm (et) javal: I can't say more than has been said I suppose. AoT held a special place in our heart. We admired and respected him, and especially the way he handled the final leg of his journey. The memories we all hold of Muster #1 will now be even more cherished. With a great sadness, I wish you all well, and hope you'll continue to be the tight community of friends that he grew to love. We will miss you AoT....

11/1/2005 5:06 pm (et) Mike: AoT was one of the first friends that I met when I first joined WebAmerica all those years ago.

11/1/2005 5:07 pm (et) Marie: Would it be inappropriate to hoist a few Bud Lights in AoT's memory?

11/1/2005 5:08 pm (et) javal: Mike, it's good to see you my friend, but I have to go try to absorb this. Be well...

11/1/2005 5:09 pm (et) Mike: However you would like to recognize a good man, Marie, I would think is appropriate.

11/1/2005 5:10 pm (et) Marie: I never met him....that is my loss....I wish I could have :(

11/1/2005 5:14 pm (et) Marie: Good night all.

11/1/2005 5:57 pm (et) ks: Seeing the comment concerning the vacant chair...I believe it's been AoT's sword that's been hung on the chair in years past.

11/1/2005 6:00 pm (et) Harry: Hi, ks. Sad news indeed. I last heard from AoT in this room a few weeks ago...we were kidding about propping him up on a stretcher at Gettysburg a' la Sickles, as he was concerned his stomping days were over.

11/1/2005 6:01 pm (et) Teej Smith: Hello everyone. I didn't know your friend AoT, but please accept my condolences just the same.

11/1/2005 6:02 pm (et) Harry: I never met him and knew him only via CWWT and this room.

11/1/2005 6:02 pm (et) ks: I was wondering earlier if it had been a couple or a few weeks. Steve and I just discussed this on the phone recently. The absence had us wondering.

11/1/2005 6:02 pm (et) Harry: I think I asked Steve about him a couple nights ago in this room via PM.

11/1/2005 6:02 pm (et) ks: AoT was a pistol, Teej. VERY well read, particularly on the Trans-Mississippi.

11/1/2005 6:03 pm (et) ks: Yes, you did, Harry.

11/1/2005 6:03 pm (et) Harry: Played football for Army, Steve tells me.

11/1/2005 6:03 pm (et) ks: He was a real teacher on CWWT. His lengthy and well thought out posts were much appreciated and thought provoking.

11/1/2005 6:05 pm (et) Teej Smith: Was his passing sudden?

11/1/2005 6:05 pm (et) ks: Yep. :) Remembering that he was the connection to Shelby Foote as he and Mr. Foote had hoisted a few together through the years. AoT was the one who managed to get the signed copies of Shiloh which were presented at the first muster. He'd been trying to set it up for Foote to be at muster last year, but obviously health concerns changed those plans.

11/1/2005 6:06 pm (et) Harry: I think it's good that someone saw the obit. I'm sometimes concerned that these folks I know only via these forums, e-ssociates, could vanish without my ever knowing why.

11/1/2005 6:06 pm (et) ks: He'd been undergoing treatment for cancer, Teej. Here in the chatroom he'd told us about how difficult the chemo had been and how the damage done by the treatments he feared could be terminal.

11/1/2005 6:07 pm (et) Harry: Though I think with us knowing about his health issues we would have had some notion.

11/1/2005 6:07 pm (et) Harry: Apparently the chemo did in his lungs.

11/1/2005 6:08 pm (et) ks: His family has GGOoG. That's been an award of sorts (there's a history and a story behind it). GGOoG = General Grant Oil of Gladness...it's a collectible whiskey decanter that's been passed from member to member since muster number one. The Muster 2004 recipient chose to send it to AoT for 2005 in hopes of it being a lift for his spirits.

11/1/2005 6:09 pm (et) Teej Smith: Went through a cancer scare with my Mom earlier this spring. Lucky for us, hers was a success story.

11/1/2005 6:10 pm (et) ks: I wonder if he told them about GGOog and it's significance? I suppose that's something MAP will sort out.

11/1/2005 6:10 pm (et) Teej Smith: Harry makes a good point about finding out when a "cyber" friend has passed. I think about that a lot.

11/1/2005 6:11 pm (et) ks: Harry, as I said earlier, I've been reluctant to Google thinking I might find exactly this info. Grateful that Hank did do the searching today.

11/1/2005 6:12 pm (et) ks: We've discussed it quite a few times with the group, Teej. Discussed it because we have lost a number of members through the years. Irish, young Henry, Connie, KyReb...

11/1/2005 6:14 pm (et) Teej Smith: Of that group I only knew Connie through the GDG.

11/1/2005 6:16 pm (et) Teej Smith: Considering how many very good friends I've made over the years on the various groups I belong to, I've often thought of making sure my husband would know who to contact should anything happen to me.

11/1/2005 6:18 pm (et) ks: Same here. My husband and children know to contact Basecat, shotgun and others if anything ever happened here.

11/1/2005 6:20 pm (et) Teej Smith: I would hope that Mark would think to call Eric Wittenberg or Jim Morgan in that situation.

11/1/2005 6:20 pm (et) ks: Very unreal. Remembering all of the teasing as well as the teaching AoT did in chat. Before the first muster (and even afterwards) he'd refer to Red and I as the "Fun Girls from Mount Pilot". lol He'd share these incredible insights on the war, particularly in the west, and then crack you up with posting pictures of the 3 stooges or Charlie's Angels with captions naming the characters after people in the room.

11/1/2005 6:22 pm (et) Teej Smith: It sounds like he was a very nice guy.

11/1/2005 6:23 pm (et) Harry: But when you think about it, if not for the internet and these forums, we'd never have known anything about him or each other. We live in wonderful times, despite what some people want to believe.

11/1/2005 6:25 pm (et) Teej Smith: Oh, I AGREE, Harry. Through our various musters I've met some of the best people in the world. But what makes it so nice is, thanks to the internet, when we meet, it's not like meeting a stranger.

11/1/2005 6:31 pm (et) ks: True. When I first became involved with CW chat there were so many friends concerned about my chatting with strangers on the internet.

11/1/2005 6:32 pm (et) Teej Smith: Same here. My family really freaked out when I announced I was going to Virginia to meet some of my cyber friends.

11/1/2005 6:33 pm (et) ks: Same experience here, Teej. Friends couldn't believe I was going to VA and meeting up with "shotgun", "Buckshot" and "Korky" at Gettysburg. And that first trip to muster in TN, people really thought I'd lost it. Now they ask me to come to there various civic groups to talk about the CW and my chatroom experiences. :)

11/1/2005 6:36 pm (et) ks: I think most of us are caught up in memories of time spent (face to face or here in the chatroom) with AoT. Very sad to learn of his death. Am glad though to know he's no longer in pain.

11/1/2005 6:44 pm (et) Harry: Gotta head out. Talk to you all later, and ks I'm with you on your last thought.

11/1/2005 6:45 pm (et) ks: Bye Harry.

11/1/2005 6:45 pm (et) Teej Smith: Bye, Harry. Need to finish getting dinner together myself. Again, KS I'm very sorry about your friend.

11/1/2005 6:45 pm (et) ks: Thanks, Teej. See you later.

11/1/2005 6:46 pm (et) ks: Believe I'll head on out as well. Will be in later this evening.

11/1/2005 7:19 pm (et) TreeFrog: Evening ld

11/1/2005 7:22 pm (et) ld: Good evening Tree- Just read about AoT- I am so sorry

11/1/2005 7:23 pm (et) ld: Had many an interesting discussion with him.

11/1/2005 7:24 pm (et) ld: Going all the way back to WebAmerica- he will be missed.

11/1/2005 7:28 pm (et) TreeFrog: ld, that he will.

11/1/2005 7:29 pm (et) ld: Geez it is not like we were close but he has always been a mainstay in the chat room and CWWT- damn I will miss his posts.

11/1/2005 7:49 pm (et) ks: Good evening again...

11/1/2005 7:49 pm (et) ld: Hello Ks so sorry to hear about Wakefield.

11/1/2005 7:50 pm (et) ks: Yes, it is sad, ld. Quite a loss to all of us.

11/1/2005 7:51 pm (et) TreeFrog: evening KS

11/1/2005 8:00 pm (et) ks: Sorry, on the phone with Marie. She says she's with us all in spirit.

11/1/2005 8:04 pm (et) bluelady: ld I was just reading the scroll and am just in shock.

11/1/2005 8:05 pm (et) ld: As were most of us.

11/1/2005 8:05 pm (et) ld: Wakefield will be sorely missed

11/1/2005 8:06 pm (et) bluelady: Yeah and I was just on the phone with CWgal

11/1/2005 8:06 pm (et) ks: Figured that might the case, blue.

11/1/2005 8:07 pm (et) bluelady: Yeah...I can still see him in the field explaining all about Chickamauga and I was thinking how could one person know so much!

11/1/2005 8:08 pm (et) ks: Imagine we're all replaying in our heads the times (in chat and/or in person) we shared w/him.

11/1/2005 8:08 pm (et) bluelady: I just told newyawk so he knows now as well

11/1/2005 8:10 pm (et) TreeFrog: How's NewYawk been doing? Haven't seen him around recently

11/1/2005 8:10 pm (et) ld: He was one of the first folks I spoke to on WebAmerica (along with shotgun)

11/1/2005 8:10 pm (et) bluelady: well he is back in school in VA.. Lynchburg College and will graduate in May

11/1/2005 8:11 pm (et) ld: remember him in HS

11/1/2005 8:12 pm (et) bluelady: yep as do I but not from WebAmerica...he was one of the first I talked to along with KyReb and scarlet

11/1/2005 8:13 pm (et) ld: Has anyone talked to Scarlet lately?

11/1/2005 8:13 pm (et) bluelady: Not since July here

11/1/2005 8:14 pm (et) TreeFrog: I've haven't heard from her since KyReb passed

11/1/2005 8:15 pm (et) ks: Emailing 3rdLa and 3rdLady

11/1/2005 8:16 pm (et) ld: Wish I could dig up all the old email addresses I had but lost them all when the puter crashed

11/1/2005 8:16 pm (et) bluelady: I was just telling NY that one of the things that impressed me about AoT was his very caring nature...not only for the boy Henry but for the people he kept at his home who were evacuated from Katrina

11/1/2005 8:17 pm (et) ld: A class act.

11/1/2005 8:18 pm (et) bluelady: Amen

11/1/2005 8:18 pm (et) ks: Scarlet had been in the CWi chatroom a number of times after KyReb's death.

11/1/2005 8:19 pm (et) ld: Is she still in Pa?

11/1/2005 8:19 pm (et) bluelady: well chaplain bluelady will have another one to add to the list of those who are now talking directly to their heroes.

11/1/2005 8:19 pm (et) ks: She went back to Texas for a while, but then headed back to PA and her business.

11/1/2005 8:20 pm (et) bluelady: I think she will be in Gettysburg until after Remembrance day and then head back to Texas until the spring.. at least that is what I thought she said before.

11/1/2005 8:20 pm (et) ld: Well I would think he and Shelby are having a good time.

11/1/2005 8:20 pm (et) bluelady: But that was when I talked to her in July.

11/1/2005 8:27 pm (et) ks: Tend to believe that's the case, ld. ;)

11/1/2005 8:28 pm (et) bluelady: and the AoT generals

11/1/2005 8:29 pm (et) TreeFrog: Well folks I hate to take off, but I must get something to eat before bed. And I could really use to get to bed early. Has been an incredibly long day at work..... this has just not been a good day

11/1/2005 8:30 pm (et) ks: Need to log off for a while. Will be back later. Take care.

11/1/2005 8:30 pm (et) ks: DEFINITELY the AoT Generals, blue. ;)

11/1/2005 8:30 pm (et) bluelady: you too ks

11/1/2005 8:30 pm (et) bluelady: :)

11/1/2005 8:39 pm (et) bluelady: Well folks I will add here to ask you all to keep me and my oldest daughter in your thoughts as well. She is having 6 teeth surgically removed on Thursday and I will be traveling to her place that evening

11/1/2005 8:40 pm (et) ld: I will keep her in my prayers blue

11/1/2005 8:41 pm (et) bluelady: thanks

11/1/2005 8:41 pm (et) ld: As well as you and AoT.

11/1/2005 8:42 pm (et) bluelady: And his family...direct and extended.

11/1/2005 8:42 pm (et) bluelady: Well I must be off. I have things I need to do yet this evening .

11/1/2005 8:43 pm (et) ld: see you soon Blue

11/1/2005 9:05 pm (et) Basecat: Very hard to put into words what I am feeling here in the Garden State this evening. Hard to believe that AoT has left us, and left us way too early. I guess my fave memory of Steve was at Chickamauga, after the tour when he, Mike, Shotgun and me hung around having a couple of cold beers after touring the battlefield that very warm afternoon. Always amazed me that when he did those tours for us, not once did he use any notes, and just had such control on the events that took place there. I find it very ironic that Steve would pass away just a few months after his friend Shelby Foote did, and am sure today they got together, and talked, like I know they both enjoyed to do.

11/1/2005 9:09 pm (et) Basecat: Steve was also part of the Muster Steves, and could be very confusing when folks would say Steve, and three of us would say yes at the same time. :) I know he really wanted to go to Gettysburg next year, as it had been a long time since he had been there, but while he won't be there in person, he'll be there in spirit. Am honored to have known Steve, and am proud to call him my friend. May God Rest his Soul.

11/1/2005 9:37 pm (et) Basecat: Back...been sitting here staring at the screen.

11/1/2005 9:40 pm (et) ks: Been there. Done that. Hello, Base.

11/1/2005 9:41 pm (et) Basecat: Evening ks...

11/1/2005 9:46 pm (et) Basecat: Off to dial...Might check back in here later. Night.

11/1/2005 11:25 pm (et) amhistoryguy: I was scrolling back a bit - sad day here today

11/1/2005 11:26 pm (et) mobile_96: yea, saw the notice on AoT earlier

11/1/2005 11:51 pm (et) Basecat: Evening Sky.

11/1/2005 12:01 pm (et) Skylark: hello - I just heard and I am so, so sorry

11/1/2005 12:03 pm (et) Basecat: Been a tough day here Sky, and am gonna miss him a lot.

11/1/2005 12:04 pm (et) Basecat: Know you would have loved him as well, and last time I had talked to him , he really wanted to go to Gettysburg next June.

11/1/2005 12:06 pm (et) Basecat: Hard to believe, that yet again we will have a vacant chair at muster. Many of us old timers held AoT in very high regard, and while saddened that he has left us, we all take comfort that he is not in pain anymore.

11/1/2005 12:06 pm (et) Skylark: I was just talking about him to my Mom this evening, about this amazing man I hadn't met (yet) who had taken in Hurricane refugees even when he was in such pain. Please accept my deepest sympathy, those of you who knew him. It was always a pleasure to chat with him here.

11/1/2005 12:08 pm (et) Basecat: He was top notch Sky, and am glad to have called him my friend.

11/1/2005 12:09 pm (et) Basecat: BTW...All of us Old timers...not many...Having trouble with words tonight.

11/1/2005 12:10 pm (et) 57oh: Damm!

11/1/2005 12:10 pm (et) Skylark: Sorry, 57oh, this is a heck of a way to hear that kind of news

11/1/2005 12:11 pm (et) Skylark: Base, have you been in touch with GenP, MAP and PHP?

11/1/2005 12:12 pm (et) Basecat: talked to MAP, GenP, and left a message for PHP.

11/1/2005 12:14 pm (et) Skylark: Hard to know what to say

11/1/2005 12:15 pm (et) Basecat: speechless here.

11/1/2005 12:16 pm (et) Skylark: Listen ... I'll check out now. My thoughts are with all of you. Peace to Mr. Wakefield.

11/1/2005 12:18 pm (et) 57oh: I guess as we all get older these things will happen more often. Irish was the first many years ago.

11/1/2005 12:19 pm (et) 57oh: I'll bet Henry is happy to see AoT!! :)

11/1/2005 12:25 pm (et) 57oh: Sad here.

11/1/2005 12:26 pm (et) Basecat: sorry..on the phone here

11/1/2005 12:26 pm (et) 57oh: Not much to say Base.

11/1/2005 12:29 pm (et) 57oh: Night Base.

11/1/2005 12:40 pm (et) Basecat: Guess I have the last word in here tonight...Cheers Aot, and thanks for touching all of our lives. Hope all who pass this way have a fine Wednesday. Night all.

11/1/2005 13:52 pm (et) ks: MAP called this evening and we're checking into some possible Civil War related donation that we could make in AoT's memory. Should efforts there bear fruit, we'll share the news here.

11/2/2005 6:35 am (et) Babs: There was a time I would think I would be the first person of the day to sign in around this time only to find AoT already here with the coffee going. We never said a lot. We sat here drinking coffee and reading the scroll while we waited for the sun to come up and MAP to start breakfast. It was comfortable and we didn't have to say much. You will be missed, dear friend.

11/2/2005 7:58 am (et) Coy: I just heard about AoT. I don't know what to say. I so very much enjoyed our conversations. The time we spent at Chickamauga was priceless. His compassion for people was unmeasurable. A truly great loss....

11/2/2005 8:18 am (et) CWgal: Although it's a sunny morn here in Chick/Chatt, we light a candle in memory of our friend AoT. What a special man he was. It was my pleasure to have met him at the 2001 Chick/Chatt muster. He amazed us with his knowledge of the battles and brought the action to life. We have lost an important part of our civil war family, but he will be remembered for the things we learned and carry with us. Good night AoT, we will cross over the river and meet you again someday.

11/2/2005 10:30 am (et) ks: I see I failed to mention what places MAP and I discussed w/regard to donations in AoT's name. TN was obvious. Checking into options at Shiloh and Franklin.

11/2/2005 10:32 am (et) Marie: I would think Shiloh, knowing of his love for and knowledge of the field.

11/2/2005 10:38 am (et) ks: Yes, that was my first thought as well. But MA reminded me of his great love for Franklin and the AoT as well as his close friendship with Tom Cartright. Now is a time when things are changing at Franklin. Money might do more good there.

11/2/2005 10:39 am (et) Jay: enters the chatroom.

11/2/2005 10:40 am (et) ks: Good morning Jay.

11/2/2005 10:42 am (et) HankC: enters the chatroom.

11/2/2005 10:54 am (et) HankC: well, I reckon there will be lots of long pauses and little chit chat today...

11/2/2005 10:57 am (et) ks: Many are lost in thought. Suspect you're right, Hank.

11/2/2005 11:00 am (et) ks: logs off.

11/2/2005 11:03 am (et) Marie: BBL

11/2/2005 11:03 am (et) Marie: logs off.

11/2/2005 3:22 pm (et) Tecumseh: Hello all.

11/2/2005 3:22 pm (et) HankC: now here is a stranger ;)

11/2/2005 3:31 pm (et) HankC: our friend, AoT passed away on Saturday...remember him?

11/2/2005 3:32 pm (et) Tecumseh: I certainly do.

11/2/2005 6:56 pm (et) 3rdLa: Been reading the log.....sure been thinking about AoT all day, since I received the email from ks....fond memories from the Cornith/Iuka/Shiloh trip.....talked civil war and a lot of IU basketball......some damn good stories he told, some on himself.....so very intelligent.....a professional for sure and I just hate it that he's gone, so soon in his life.......hey gang, stay healthy and safe......each of you are special........later

11/2/2005 9:14 pm (et) GenP: enters the chatroom.

11/2/2005 9:15 pm (et) Skylark: Well. welcome home, General Pickett!

11/2/2005 9:15 pm (et) GenP: Hey Ya Skylark

11/2/2005 9:16 pm (et) Skylark: It is good to see you here.

11/2/2005 9:18 pm (et) GenP: Well, it's been a rough day for me as well as others. We never expect the empty chair, but this one is a tough one.

11/2/2005 9:18 pm (et) Skylark: I know it, my friend. Scroll may do your heart some good.

11/2/2005 9:20 pm (et) GenP: Don't think I can do that at this time. Could ya save some of it for me?

11/2/2005 9:21 pm (et) Skylark: Sure thing. Can you hit the log button?

11/2/2005 9:21 pm (et) Skylark: Sorry - I've got you covered, never mind.

11/2/2005 9:23 pm (et) GenP: Sorry. I got to go, I can't do this right now, sorry,

11/2/2005 9:27 pm (et) TreeFrog: evening Sky

11/2/2005 9:28 pm (et) Skylark: Sorry Frog - phone. How are you?

11/2/2005 9:29 pm (et) Skylark: Hope you are doing well.

11/2/2005 9:30 pm (et) TreeFrog: I'm doing alright. over the shock and awe of the past few days....

11/2/2005 9:31 pm (et) Skylark: Yes, it is so very sad, isn't it.

11/2/2005 9:31 pm (et) Skylark: Hard to know what to say... I never did have the pleasure of meeting AoT face-to-face, but our discussions in here were always lively, and I already miss those.

11/2/2005 9:34 pm (et) TreeFrog: I understand..... Even though I've been chatting in here for god knows how many years. (since '96, almost ten now?) there's very few folks I've met face to face. But have had many wonderful times despite that

11/2/2005 9:37 pm (et) Skylark: I have often thought that in here the friendships are almost deeper than those I've made in person, because we all relate essentially on a spiritual level. Does that make sense...?

11/2/2005 9:40 pm (et) Vickie: hi sky and tree

11/2/2005 9:40 pm (et) TreeFrog: sky, I can sorta understand that

11/2/2005 9:40 pm (et) Vickie: just saw the news ks left about AoT over at Henrys

11/2/2005 9:40 pm (et) Vickie: Had to pop in here and say how sad it makes me even though I never met him.

11/2/2005 9:40 pm (et) TreeFrog: Evening Vickie and George

11/2/2005 9:41 pm (et) George: Hello everyone.

11/2/2005 9:41 pm (et) George: What is the news about AoT?

11/2/2005 9:41 pm (et) Skylark: Hello George

11/2/2005 9:42 pm (et) George: Hi Skylark

11/2/2005 9:42 pm (et) Skylark: I'm afraid we have lost our friend, George.

11/2/2005 9:43 pm (et) George: That is very sad. What happened?

11/2/2005 9:43 pm (et) Skylark: It was cancer.

11/2/2005 9:44 pm (et) George: I'm sorry to hear that.

11/2/2005 9:44 pm (et) George: When did he pass away?

11/2/2005 9:45 pm (et) Skylark: I believe it was Saturday?

11/2/2005 9:46 pm (et) George: Skylark, thanks for the information.

11/2/2005 9:46 pm (et) Skylark: Well - I was just in for a second - talking Cuzzin GenP through the log-in process. We should be seeing a lot more of him now.

11/2/2005 9:47 pm (et) Skylark: Sorry it was such bad news. George; it will echo through our little camp for quite a while, I think.

11/2/2005 9:48 pm (et) George: I think so too.
